Environmental Commission
Join us to create biodiversity, reduce waste, fight climate change and build community.
Who we are: We're 8 volunteers appointed by the Mayor, plus 3 associate non-voting members and a lot of orbiting enthusiasts who love something specific—zero waste, forest trails, you name it.
Our work: We plan events, do outreach and education and also review site plans for projects that go before the Planning and Zoning Boards (volunteers would be welcome to help with this task). In addition, we have liaisons to the Planning Board, the Shade Tree Management Board, the Open Space Committee, the Sustainable Madison Committee and the Climate Action committee.
What we love best: Creating community. We've run Eco House and Garden Tours since 2019 so that everyone in town can see just how cool our neighbors are. We give away pollinator seeds and native plant seedlings multiple times a year. And we create lots of community events, including Town-WIde Yard Sales, an EV Expo, a Nature Lover's Speaker Series—and lots more
Awards: We've won Environmental Achievement Awards from the Association of NJ Environmental Commissions for seven straight years. Plus our elected officials—Mayor Conley and Councilperson Ehrlich—have won awards for their leadership.
Come to our meetings: We meet on Zoom on the last Thursday of the month (except in November and December). Check out the town calender for Zoom links or sign up for our excellent newsletter. We are not boring and we'd love to meet you and hear your ideas.
