Composting
How to compost at home—or have your food scraps picked up

Food waste is a huge climate issue. Approximately a third of all food produced globally is wasted. In addition, livestock and decomposing food waste produce methane, a greenhouse gas that, over a 20 year period, is "80 times more potent at warming than carbon dioxide," according to the United Nations Environment Programme.
Many of us can't install solar panels or switch from gas boilers to heat pumps. But we can compost. Not only will we mitigate climate change, we'll keep produce a rich soil amendment that improves soil health and reduces the need for watering. Composting is a simple formula of one-third greens (food waste) and one-third browns (leaves). By using leaves from your yard, you're preserving the nutrients created by your trees--and reducing that emissions associated with collecting leaves an hauling them out of town.
