Free Native Seeds to Sow Right Now
|
Take home free wildflower seeds! If you're dreaming about beautiful flowers blooming in your yard, you’re in luck: Winter is the perfect time to sow the seeds of our locally native wildflowers!
Wildflowers native to NJ and our region are beautiful and ecologically beneficial. They need no fertilizer, and after the first growing season, they will need almost no supplemental watering and will require less maintenance than their ornamental cousins. There will be complete instructions available about how, when, and where to sow each species of seed, as well as live demonstrations and experienced gardeners to answer your questions. You do not need to bring any seeds with you; we encourage you to take as many free seeds as you can reasonably use. However, if you do have NJ native plant seeds to donate, we would be happy to receive them. *Please bring only seeds of NJ native plants, preferably wild type, aka straight species (i.e., please no hybrids or cultivars). If you are bringing seeds, please let us know ahead of time by emailing Joan Maccari at [email protected]. It will be very helpful if you can include both the common and scientific names of the plant species, as well as the year and the county when/where you collected the seeds. You can look up plant names at Jersey-Friendly Yards, www.jerseyyards.org. We look forward to seeing you! If you have any questions, contact Joan Maccari at [email protected]. Invasive Plant Workshop with Wildstead
Wed., January 30 at 7pm at the Madison Community Arts Center, Kings Road. Tickets are $10
It’s easy to fall in love with an invasive plant, not knowing that birds will carry its seeds to parks and forests, where new plants will grow unchecked. In the Drew Forest alone, two acres of trees were nearly choked to death by Chinese Wisteria. Barberry and ivy are invading multiple Madison parks and Burning Bush is a serious problem at Jockey Hollow.
What to do?
Join L.Be Sholar, founder of Wildstead, the native plant landscaping firm in East Hanover, for a deep dive. Learn how to replace invasives with native plants that will nourish birds and pollinators. You’ll leave with advice, handouts and lots of ecological savvy.
